      FAQs

What is the difference between NPR and PBS? ›

CPB provides direct grant support to PBS for national content and for the infrastructure that distributes content and emergency alerts from PBS to public television stations. NPR is an independent, nonprofit membership organization of separately licensed and operated public radio stations across the United States.

Does the federal government fund PBS? ›

Public broadcasting stations are funded by a combination of private donations from listeners and viewers, foundations and corporations. Funding for public television comes in roughly equal parts from government (at all levels) and the private sector.

Is PBS the most trusted news source? ›

In 2023, Americans view The Weather Channel, PBS, and the BBC as the most trustworthy major media organizations. Note: People who say the media organization is neither trustworthy nor untrustworthy, or that they don't know, are not included in the calculation.

Why does PBS say viewers like you? ›

Starting in 1977 with Wall Street Week, PBS funding credits stated that funding was provided by "(people who contribute to) (this (station) and other) Public Television Stations (nationwide)." The slogan "Viewers Like You" was introduced in July 1989, and had been rolled out into the majority of PBS programming by 1991 ...

What percentage of NPR is funded by the government? ›

NPR receives a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to less than 1% of revenues.

Who is PBS funded by? ›

PBS is funded by a combination of member station dues, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, pledge drives, and donations from both private foundations and individual citizens. All proposed funding for programming is subject to a set of standards to ensure the program is free of influence from the funding source.

      Who controls PBS? ›

As a corporate entity, PBS is governed by a board of directors, consisting of the company president, general directors from outside the organization, and representatives from some of its hundreds of noncommercial member stations.

      Who runs NPR? ›

The network is run by a board of directors—12 of whom are managers of member stations—as well as by the NPR Foundation's board of trustees and the journalists, producers and audio engineers who generate NPR content.

Is PBS regulated by the FCC? ›

In addition to achieving the policy objectives established by the PBS member stations, these guidelines also serve to ensure that broadcast programs will be in compliance with regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

What is the most trusted news agency in the world? ›

Reuters is one of the largest and most trusted news agencies in the world. The agency was established in London in 1851 by the German-born Paul Reuter.

Why does PBS show so many reruns? ›

Other shows may repeat due to audience requests or because a series is between seasons and new episodes are not yet available. (Few programs have enough original episodes to go without some repeats during the year.).

Does PBS make a profit? ›

PBS is funded by a combination of member station dues, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, pledge drives, and donations from private foundations and individual citizens. The biggest source of funding is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is a publicly funded (meaning Congress) non-profit.

What percentage of people watch PBS? ›

Our reach is wide and deep. Over the course of a year, 58% of all U.S. television households—over 130 million people—watch PBS. And thanks to our loyal viewership, we've ranked as America's No. 1 most trusted media institution for 20 years running.

Is American Public Television the same as PBS? ›

Many mistakenly refer to the entire public television system as “PBS.” However, The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is not a network (like NBC or FOX), but rather a member-based association of public television stations organized to buy and distribute programs.

Is American public media the same as NPR? ›

American Public Media (APM) is an American company that produces and distributes public radio programs in the United States, the second largest company of its type after NPR.

What is the difference between PBS and non PBS? ›

Non PBS items cover virtually all prescription items other than those listed in the PBS. Some common Non PBS items include some asthma medications, antibiotics and contraceptive pills. Non PBS items attract Police Health Pharmaceutical benefits.

What is the purpose of PBS TV? ›

PBS offers programming that expands the minds of children, documentaries that open up new worlds, non-commercialized news programs that keep citizens informed on world events and cultures and programs that expose America to the worlds of music, theater, dance and art.
