Brownie Ingredients:

1 x boxed brownie mix (including the required vegetable oil, water & eggs) or your favourite brownie recipe. We used Betty Crocker Fudge brownie mix.

A basic brownie recipe typically requires:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups white sugar or brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups of flour (all purpose flour for best results)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 eggs
  • Chocolate Chips – Optional to add to the brownie mixture.

To decorate:

1 cup frosting

Food coloring (You can use any colors that you choose for the garland but for the most festive Christmas tree brownies, we would recommend green food coloring)

Candies and or sprinkles to decorate (red and green smarties work great)

Other supplies needed:

Ziplock bag or pastry bag for piping out the frosting.

Directions: Let’s get ready to make this sweet treat for the holiday season!

Prepare the brownie batter in a large bowl, heat oven and pour batter into a prepared pan – greased, using butter or cooking spray. If you like, you can line the pan with aluminum foil

Bake your brownies as directed on the package directions on the boxed mix or use your favourite fudgy brownies recipe.

After around 25 minutes in the oven, you’ll have a tray full of brownies ready to be decorated into cute little brownie christmas trees that will make your holiday spirit so much brighter!

Allow brownies to cool at room temperature, and gently remove and lift brownies from the baking pan using a rubber spatula, and place onto parchment paper.

Divide the brownies by cutting a straight line down the center horizontally. Cut off hard edges and then cut triangles out of each half to create the trees. This is so easy, you do not need cookie cutters or any special equipment to create the tree shapes.

This method is so easy, all you need is a sharp knife and you will want to create basic triangle shapes. The bottom of each brownie triangle will be short side and there will be two longer sides, creating the effect of a tree.

It is so simple – you can’t get it wrong.

Each triangular piece will become one of the little Christmas trees.

Now, moving on to the frosting. You can use whichever type of frosting you prefer, from vanilla frosting, cream cheese frosting, American buttercream frosting or if you prefer you can use basic white icing made with icing sugar and water.

In a small bowl, mix food coloring into frosting until you reach desired shade of green frosting. Spoon the frosting into a piping bag or alternatively you can use a zip lock bag / sandwich bag with the tip cut off from the corner of the bag using sharp scissors.

Make sure to have the brownies on a flat surface, and draw the decorative garland onto trees using curvy zigzag lines

Decorate the trees with candies and sprinkles. You could try adding a little star to the top of the brownies to create a star tip or even a little angel on top of the Christmas tree if you find mini Christmas angel candies.

For a simpler result try adding green sprinkles or sprinkling powdered sugar on top. You can also sprinkle crushed candy canes or peppermint sticks, to add flavour and colour.

#4: Christmas Tree Brownies

Little Debbie's Cosmic Brownies are a perennial crowd-pleaser, and these little trees—the cutest of all the seasonal holiday options—are essentially the same thing, with a tapered shape, green icing, and the little candies on top serving as tiny ornaments.

How to cut 9x13 brownies into triangles? ›

To cut brownie into triangles, cut into 3 rows. (See link below for diagram.) Cut each row into 5 triangles. Set aside leftover pieces for snacking.

How do you spruce up a box of brownies? ›

Salt + Chocolate = BFFs

This is the easiest way to upgrade boxed brownies. Salt enhances the natural flavors and sweetness in chocolate and suppresses its bitterness. Sprinkle a few pinches of flaky salt on top of the brownie batter before baking.

How do you make brownies out of the box better? ›

Add Salt. If you've ever found boxed brownies to be too sweet for your taste, stir a pinch of salt into the batter before baking. This'll help bring out the deeper chocolate flavors. You can even try sprinkling some flaky sea salt on top of the brownies as soon as they come out of the oven.

Why is cosmic brownies so good? ›

Cosmic brownies are so dang good because they have that delicious dense, fudgy and chewy texture. So in order to recreate that same richness, I pulled out all the stops to create a brownie just like the real deal. Here's how to achieve that same texture: Use a mix of light brown sugar and granulated sugar.

What is the main ingredient in cosmic brownies? ›

SUGAR, DEGERMINATED YELLOW CORN MEAL, WHOLE GRAIN OAT FLOUR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, PALM OIL, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF BROWN SUGAR SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, WHEAT FLOUR, SALT, BAKING SODA, WHEAT STARCH, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, PAPRIKA EXTRACT COLOR, RED 40, YELLOW 5, BLUE 1, YELLOW 6, RED 40 LAKE, BLUE 2 LAKE, ...

How many brownies can you get out of a 9x13 pan? ›

If it's a regular recipe or a boxed mix, it will likely be a 9x9 pan, which I usually cut into about 9 bars, or a 9x13 pan, which I usually cut into 12 servings. Foodservice recipes usually call for much larger pans and provide many more servings.

How many bars does a 9x13 pan make? ›

The overall recipe calls for a pan size of 9" x 13", which is a total area of 117 square inches. Remember, to find the area of a rectangular shape, you simply multiply the length by the width. If we want to cut 1" x 1" bars from this, we will get a total of 117 bars, since each bar is 1 square inch.

What happens when you add an extra egg to brownie mix? ›

If you opt to add more eggs, say double the amount, something interesting happens. Even though you are adding more moisture, the air bubbles that you catch in the extra eggs add volume, which decreases the density of your final product. This makes your brownies rise and gives them a much more cake-like texture.

Should I use milk instead of water for box brownies? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

What can I add to my brownie mix to make it better? ›

Spices and Salts. Spices and salts can really transform the overall flavor of a brownie. Chile powder is famous for pairing well with chocolate, so you can start by adding a small amount—about 1/2 teaspoon—and adjusting to your liking. Cinnamon and cardamom are also excellent pairings (and known friends of chocolate!).

Why did my box brownies turn out like cake? ›

Too much flour? Go back to your edges - if they're not burnt, look a good colour (similar to the centre) but the brownie is too cakey and dry throughout, the recipe probably included too much flour.

How do you keep brownies from getting hard on the ends? ›

Glass or dark-colored pans can cause the edges to overbake or even burn. Always grease the pan thoroughly with shortening, softened butter, or cooking spray. (Do this even if the recipe doesn't specify.)

How much butter instead of oil in brownies? ›

Replacing Oil with Butter

It couldn't be easier to substitute butter for oil using a 1:1 ratio. This should work with olive, canola, vegetable, and coconut oils. Simply melt and cool the butter to room temperature, then continue with your recipe. (If the recipe calls for ½ cup oil, use ½ cup melted and cooled butter.)

What are the three types of brownies? ›

Brownie textures fall into three general camps… Cakey, fudgy and chewy. Cakey brownies, like the name implies, are light, moist and airy, with a slightly fluffy, cake-like interior. Fudgy brownies are moist, dense and gooey, with almost the texture of fudge, but not quite as compact.

Why are cosmic brownies called that? ›

A traditional cosmic brownie is a thin fudge brownie with chocolate ganache on top and colorful sprinkles. They are called cosmic brownies because they were inspired by the cosmic bowling trend in the late 90s. Mine are a combination of My PERFECT Fudge Brownies and the chocolate sugar cookie bars from Frosted.

What brand are cosmic brownies? ›

Covered in delicious fudge icing, chewy Little Debbie® Cosmic Brownies feature a sprinkling of rainbow-colored, candy-coated chocolate chips for a surprise crunch and an all-out chocolate experience you'll love.
