Green River’s Rye whiskey is equal parts complicated and easy to drink, making it a great weekday sipping rye or addition to any co*cktail. With a nose of brown spice and cinnamon apples, this rye is inviting right out of the gate. On the palate, it’s plenty easy-drinking and clocks in at 95 proof, with a well-integrated viscosity. The pour is chock full of cloves and pepper, and one sip hosts flavors of brown sugar cinnamon-dusted sourdough toast. Frey Ranch refers to itself as a “whiskey farm,” and the Frey family possesses over 165 years of agriculture expertise at their property. The property is a grain-to-glass whiskey producer, meaning the grains are grown at Frey Ranch, giving the Freys complete control over the whiskey production process.
This rye whiskey hosts over five years of aging and an ABV percentage of 50%. The nose on this massive rye features candied ginger, honey and gobs of brown sugar. Yet even though there’s 100% rye in the mashbill, Frey Ranch’s rye is more reminiscent of softer Kentucky rye.
Yet don’t let the nose fool you, the palate is powerful and massive. With tobacco, black fruits like raisins and rich vanilla bean, Frey Ranch’s rye whiskey is no shrinking violet. The oak is beautifully integrated with lots of structure, and caramel candies aplenty in this pour. The finish lingers on with honey, ginger and butterscotch drizzle.
Fans of massive, bold and punchy ryes will fall hard for Frey Ranch’s rye whiskey and it will add depth and dimension to any co*cktail. Consider putting this rye into a Sazerac.

Sometimes, you just need a rye that’s a masterpiece. A rye that’s meant to be sipped neat and savored throughout the evening. Barrell Craft’s 16 Year Gray Label Seagrass is that rye. With a price that sits within the $200 range, this falls into the “splurge” category as far as ryes go, but it was one of the few whiskeys we’ve ever stumbled across to receive a perfect score at Bottle Raiders. So, there’s that.
Barrell Craft Spirits 16 Year Gray Label Seagrass was distilled in Canada and then made its journey into the United States. Once in the good old US of A, it aged in a mixture of Martinique rhum, Madeira and Apricot brandy casks. The rye whiskey was bottled at a cask strength of 65.41% and is powerful, to say the least.
Picture a nose that’s nothing short of captivating, with a syrupy sweet fruity quality. Candied apples and pears interlaced with cinnamon syrup and freshly picked orchard fruit. The palate boasts a harmonious blend of fruit, oak and spice. Apple pie fans will fall hard for this rye, as those flavors stand out on the pour. The finish lingers and is hot, powerful perfection.

Middle West Dark Pumpernickel Straight Rye for Cold Weather Sipping

Middle West Spirits is an indie distillery based out of Ohio, and we’ve fallen head over heels for its rye whiskeys. With an affordable price of $46.99, this rye whiskey boasts a four-grain mashbill of pumpernickel rye, soft red winter wheat, 2-row barley and yellow corn. This rye whiskey spent a minimum of four years in new oak and was bottled at 96 proof.
As the temperatures drop, you’ll want to pour yourself a glass of this one and consider adding it to a Manhattan. The nose is dark and brooding, with gingerbread, Luxardo syrup, and marshmallow fluff. On the palate, there’s plenty of walnut bread, chili powder and brown sugar — talk about a cerebral sipper.
The marshmallow floats throughout the pour, from nose to finish, adding a bit of lift to an otherwise heavy rye. The finish on this is darkly decadent, and fans of brands like Michter’s will find themselves coming back for glass after glass, especially as autumn draws near.
